E-waste Detox drive
11-02-2022

One of the greatest threats to the environment today is our erratic waste disposal system. One specific type of waste which also happens to be one of the fastest growing waste streams is Electronic waste or ‘e-waste’. Various electronic products and their parts which are unwanted or damaged often cause serious environmental and health hazards if not treated properly and left unchecked. Keeping this in mind, our college has started an e-waste management initiative in collaboration with a Guwahati based NGO – Earthful foundation- for efficient and scientific disposal of e-wastes generated in our college. The NGO has carried out an ‘E-waste detox drive’ in the campus, under which a program of ten days (20th to 29th November, 2021) was undertaken including sharing of posters, videos and awareness talks for raising awareness regarding threats and management of e-waste. It also comprised an e-waste collection drive, and e-wastes generated within the college campus such as unused computers, batteries, led bulbs, circuits etc. were collected by the NGO (on 6th December, 2021) and sent to their service partners for proper scientific disposal and recycling. Pollution Control Board of Assam and Bin Bag were the supporting partner and recycling partner respectively, for this drive. Additionally, the NGO has also planned to collaborate on solid waste management programs and carry out awareness campaigns regarding the need for segregating organic waste, plastic waste, and hazardous waste products.
