INNOVATION AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY CELL

Introduction

The advancement of science and technology and the development of novel ideas and innovations almost go hand in hand. The same calls for the need for the safeguard and protection against misuse and abuse. The Innovation and Intellectual Property Cell was established with the intention of creating awareness among the members of the college and society on the importance of intellectual property, the rights and privileges associated with it. It endeavours to encourage creativity and innovation on college premises leading to generation of Intellectual property. It also vouches to nurture such innovative ideas and extend its support to the public of our locality engaged in development of intellectual property.

Objectives

• To promote, preserve, encourage and provide assistance in scientific investigation and research.

• To develop consciousness among the students, teachers, and masses about IPR through awareness programmes, seminars and workshops etc.

• To foster and provide support to the common public in obtaining privileges and protection for their ideas or innovation.

• To motivate students and faculty members to go for patentable works.

Major Objectives

The Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Cell in collaboration with IIC, Suren Das College, Hajo and an NGO named Earthful Foundation; Guwahati organized an exposure visit to the Muslimpatty village of Hajo, Kamrup situated at a distance of 2 km from the college campus. The visit was aimed at understanding the economic and social conditions of the local artisans of Hajo involved in the brass metal industries. The brass metal industry is a traditional and local industry of the people of Hajo. So understanding their economic conditions as well as social conditions for their improvement is highly essential. The visit was carried out by a team consisting of 10 students, 3 faculties and 5 members of the NGO. An elaborate report on the survey is under process.

Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights

  • The IIC in collaboration with IQAC of Suren Das College, Hajo organised a seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights” on 12th April, 2021 in the college auditorium. Dr. Ranjit Kumar Barman, Head, Science & Technology Division & Nodal Officer, Patent Information Centre, Assam Science Technology & Environment Council (ASTEC), was the resource person.
  • The event was inaugurated by Dr. Hiranya Kr. Sarma, Principal, Suren Das College, and was also graced by Dr. Jogen C. Kalita, Head, Dept. of Zoology, Gauhati University. Dr. Ranjit Kr. Barman delivered a very enlightening lecture on the topic ‘Importance of IPR: Socio-economic and Educational Perspective’, and also emphasized how innovation works in natural ecosystems as well.
  • More than 116 students and 40 faculty members (incl. librarian) participated in the seminar and also engaged themselves in active interaction with the speaker.
