Introduction
WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
The department of Zoology was started in the year 2018 as a self-financing program, which was then provincialized in 2020 by Assam Government. The department offers both B.Sc. Honours and Regular CBCS courses as per Gauhati University. The department has three faculty members with varied specializations. As a newly established department, the department is furnished with a laboratory with all the basic requirements required for the course. The department of aims to prepare the students with a better understanding of different zoological aspects to face the challenges in the global context for further studies, research, or jobs. The department also prepares the students with new approaches & scientific measures for the conservation of biological diversity and sustainable use of bioresources.

MISSION
The Zoology department thrives to be one of the best centers for teaching and learning zoological sciences in the region through quality educational practices and research. The Zoology department endeavors to inculcate a thirst for knowledge in animal science, a mindset for sustainable development, and protection of biodiversity and mother nature through critical thinking among the young inquisitive minds.
VISION

To elucidate the essential role of science and biology in day-to-day life and emphasize on ‘biological literacy’ in our teaching and learning curriculum.

To introduce young minds to the cellular, molecular, ecological, physiological, biochemical, and other vivid aspects of the living world.

To instill a scientific mindset among the students and develop human resources in the fields of teaching, research, governance, and entrepreneurship.

Seminar Conducted
An International Webinar was conducted on 5th June 2021 on the occasion of World Environment Day in collaboration with IQAC, Suren Das College. The topic of the webinar was- "Status, role, and Consequences of Vulture decline across India & Asia".Mr. Christopher G.R Bowden who is a Globally threatened officer, Royal Society for the protection of birds (RSPB), UK, SAVE Programme Manager & Co-Chair IUCN Vulture specialist group was the resource person for the webinar. The principal of Suren Das College, Dr. Hiranya Kumar Sharma gave the welcome address and the inaugural session was graced by the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique. More than 300 participants participated through Google meet and YouTube live. Mr. Bowden mentioned that the number of Gypes vultures in India and Asia was found in lakhs in the eighties but has declined drastically now. He further said that there is still enough habitat for their survival and the major reason for vulture decline is Diclofenac, an NSAID used by veterinarians. This drug has been now banned by the Government of India but still in many remote places it is being practiced. Mr. Bowden also mentioned about the need for awareness amongst the general people, which can save the remnant population. He added that vulture breeding centers have been established in many places in India & Asia as an immediate conservation strategy and will be released after the environment becomes safe. The webinar was moderated by Dr. Sangita Medhi, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Suren Das College.

2. Best oral presentation award in the technical session "Biodiversity dynamics and crisis" in the 4th International Conference on Environment and Ecology, on the topic “Day Night activity budgeting of Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park.” by Dr. Sangita Medhi
